Set in the picturesque islands of Aoteroa, ‘Hard to claim’ brings readers the adventures of two sisters; Lily and Charlotte, early pioneers to the fledgling Pacific colony.
Part one of the tale begins with Lily’s ocean voyage from England, to join her father and sisters in the goldfields of New Zealand, and the two Americans, Daniel and Jackson, surveying the young country for the crown. Together they befriend various immigrants, several of whom accompany them on the many adventures they encounter as they build new lives for themselves in a harsh land.
Part two tells of Lily’s sister Charlotte, now an adult, and eager to work with the natives. The tribes are restless and at war with each other, and Maunsell Pollard has returned from England as a trained minister, and keen to work amongst the Maori and initiate peace. This is their story.
