This catalogue presents the New Zealand paintings and drawings held in a private collection which were first collected by Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829-1884) who visited New Zealand in 1858-1859. Hochstetter explored extensive parts of the provinces of Auckland and Nelson, before returning to Vienna where he published some of the first geological maps of New Zealand and a number of important illustrated works resulting from his visit. The original paintings and drawings by some of New Zealand's most important pioneering colonial artists and artist surveyors, such as Charles Heaphy who is represented with 20 works, are all reproduced in full colour - in many cases for the first time. Outline: Introduction is followed by sections on each of the artists with a biographical introduction followed by full page reproductions of the works themselves. A section of notes and references are the back provide more technical and contextual information. Biographical notes with b/w portraits of the authors bring this volume to a close.
