|Author:||Sascha Nolden and Sandy B. Nolden|
|Series:||Hochstetter Collection Basel|
This catalogue presents the nineteenth-century New Zealand photographs and prints held in a private collection which were first collected by Ferdinand von Hochstetter (1829-1884) who visited New Zealand in 1858-1859. Hochstetter explored extensive parts of the provinces of Auckland and Nelson, before returning to Vienna where he published some of the first geological maps of New Zealand and a number of important illustrated works and scientific papers resulting from his visit. The photographs dating from the 1850s to 1880s include numerous previously unpublished landscape photographs by some of New Zealand's most important pioneering colonial photographers and studios. Introduction is followed by sections on each of the photographers or studios, with an introduction followed by full page reproductions of the photographs and prints. A section of notes and references provide more technical and contextual information. Biographical notes with b/w portraits of the authors bring this volume to a close.
