Down the Years: a Scrapbook Chronicle Of Puhoi a New Zealand Bohemian Settlement 1861 1986
Was originally a 3-volume set, now reprinted in 1 volume. A scrapbook chronicle of Puhoi.
Four attempts have been made to give this material a form. First there was a large amount of text with a limited number of illustrations. Then it became obvious that where ever possible the people and the publications of the period must paint the picture, rather than someone of a later time presenting a very general view which might be chronologically accurate but which lacked the finer details that make the account live. So the scrapbook idea came to the fore. A mass of material from newspapers and other sources to "flesh out" the picture. Early reports of weddings and celebrations were very detailed - Who sang what at concerts, who proposed the wedding toasts, who was at a funeral, reports of accidents, of charges and penalties at court, all helped to set the scene of each period of ten years. - Taken from the Forward - Marjory Hurrey Puhoi 1986
